Beginners
ski/snowboard
The brainchild for this course was our friend Sam. She
had never been skiing or boarding and would have loved
to but all her friends (annoying devils!) could already.
Poor Sam was stuck with either never learning, or spending
an entire week of her precious holiday on the nursery
slopes while her friends drank vin chaud in a mountaintop
restaurant! And to top it all off, being endlessly regaled
by tales of ski-antics over dinner!
The other thing is the kit - you
don't want to splash out on fancy salopettes and jackets
only to wear them once if you find that you and the
slopes don't get on for some reason - they don't look
so good down on Bond Street on a cold day even if they
are designer! So, as part of this course, we provide
all the kit and clothing you will need.
This 4 day intensive course is designed
to get beginners up to speed with only 2 days (Thursday
and Friday) off work, the idea being that as a result
you will be able to go on a ski trip with friends later
in the season and have enough confidence and experience
to have fun. As well as some intensive ski or snowboarding
tuition, our guests also learn about navigation (that
tricky piste map!), a bit about geography and the local
ski areas and using the lifts (definitely best learned
in private!).
We don't promise to get you doing
black runs in 4 days, but this trip is intended to make
a good start to your ski holidays. We offer our beginner
skiers/boarders a 15% discount for them and their whole
party if they come back later in the season. The group
size is a minimum of 6, and a maximum of 14.

Cross country
skiing
More and more people are looking to give cross country
skiing (Ski de Fond in French) a go. It's a great way
of exploring the beautiful winter landscapes away from
the crowds - you really can experience the wilderness
and get in touch with nature just a few kilometres out
of the resort. It's a relatively easy sport to pick
up as long as you are reasonably fit. Skis and boots
are lighter with your heels free to push yourself along.
The majority of cross-country takes place
on prepared and signed trails called 'Loipe', and these
are graded from blue to black, easy to difficult, the
harder trails having more ascent and descent. But overall,
most of the skiing takes places on relatively flat terrain,
therefore takes place in valley bottoms, or high mountain
plateaux.
We have put together a flexible week of
instruction and guiding that gives a balance between
group time to ski and learn together, and free time
to master your skills at your own pace. We provide the
skis and boots as we know most people will not have
their own. This is a beginners course, but not intensive,
allowing time for independent exploration where preferred.
No previous experience is required but you should have
a reasonable level of fitness.
The group size is a minimum of 6,
and a maximum of 14. Minimum age: 14 years.

Winter activity
week
Superb scenery and a variety of winter fun make up this
mixed activity week. St Gervais makes a superb base
for a wide range of winter activities, including cross-country
skiing, winter walking, snow-shoeing, ski-touring, ice-skating,
curling and tobogganing. Our busy programme combines
a full range of activities, many of them relatively
undemanding, and some of them easy to master!
